Haydn's Nelson Mass and contemporary reflections on war and peace

After a hugely successful 2006 season and a powerful start to 2007 with the Stomp Company at the Sydney Festival, The Leichhardt Espresso Chorus under the direction of Michelle Leonard presented an innovative take on Haydn's Nelson Mass. Papa Haydn referred to his 1798 mass in D Minor as Missa in Angustiis ('mass for times of distress'), but in the turmoil of the Napoleonic era it became associated with Admiral Lord Nelson, the Battle of the Nile and the theme of war.

The program also included several contemporary pieces on war and peace. Entitled In Times of Distress it was devised with the collaboration of young vocal ensemble, Polyphony, a choir for young singers.

This performance featured the first recipient of the LEC's Young Artist in Residence program, Cameron Woodhouse. Cameron was first heard by our audiences in 2006 as a soloist at the annual Carols on Norton with Orchestra in Leichhardt's Pioneer Park.
