In 2006, ABC Classic FM radio ran the country's largest choir competition: Choir of the Year. Between March and June, 7000 singers from more than 250 youth and adult choirs came together to hear each other sing in audition sessions held around the country.

The top 41 choirs were chosen to sing in six State Finals held during July and August. The LEC was thrilled to be chosen to take part in the NSW final, broadcast live to air on 4 August from Angel Place in Sydney.

The standard of the cmpetition was very high and we were very excited to be chosen as runner-up to the University of Newcastle Chamber Choir - which went on to win the national final for adult choirs. (A couple of years later they also won Channel 7's Battle of the Choirs, where we were also knocked out by them in Episode 1's sing-off!)

The other choirs who competed in the NSW final of the ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year were the Endeavour Harmony Chorus (3rd place) and the Sydney University Graduate Choir (4th place).

It was great to have this reward for all the hard work and dedication to improving our choral quality over the years. For a non-auditioned choir to achieve this was fantastic. Our evocative performance of new Australian art music struck a chord with both audiences and judges.
